CAREER

The Basic Instrument Rating BIR (A) theory course is aimed at private pilots who intend to fly privately under instrumental meteorological conditions (IMC).

This qualification has a simplified theory and shortened flight training compared to the IR (A) instrument rating for professional pilots.

Graduates of the BIR(A) theory course have to pass an exam in BIR theory at the Civil Aviation Authority (the CAA).

Requirements:

  • At least 17 years of age to begin the course
  • At least hold a valid PPL(A) license issued in accordance with the Chicago Convention
  • Sufficient level of English

Length of training:

  • 8 weeks – up to 95 hours*
  • of which up to 14 virtual classroom hours*

*The number of BIR theory course hours is determined by the Flight School (ATO) based on the result of the IR knowledge test. An IR knowledge entry test may be taken by students who have previous knowledge of IR subjects and choose to undergo a shortened study program.

Description:

The BIR theory course is designed as a “competency based“, ie the total length and scope of the course can be shortened if a student has previous knowledge of IR procedures.  An IR knowledge entry test may be taken by students who have previous knowledge of IR subjects and choose to undergo a shortened study program. A shortened study program can be set based on the result of the test.

The Basic Instrument Rating theory course in our flight school is distance learning course. A program of the course consists of self-study and classroom time which includes video conferencing. The self-study time is 85% of the total course time. BLUE SKY AVIATION offers students a unique and comprehensive ground theory computer-based training system for self-study.

Consultations are up to 13 hours. The consultations are carried out in virtual classroom lessons led by an instructor. Virtual classroom lessons are organized as a video conference. To join the consultations a laptop or tablet with a camera and wifi is all you need.

The whole BIR theoretical knowledge course is organized in 8-week term/course with a fixed start and end dates throughout the year. The maximum total length of the course is 18 months.

Classroom consultations are held throughout the year on days published by BSA in the term schedule according to the demand.
