The BIR(A) Theory Course for Basic Instrument Rating Qualification is intended for all pilots who wish to fly privately under reduced visibility conditions, known as Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). This qualification, as compared to the Instrument Rating (IR) qualification for professional pilots (IR(A)), offers simplified theory and abbreviated flight training. The only difference from the IR(A) qualification is the higher limits of meteorological conditions under which a pilot with this qualification is authorized to fly. The BIR(A) qualification can only be obtained by a pilot who has completed the BIR(A) Theory Course at an authorized aviation school and successfully passed the BIR(A) theory exams at the Civil Aviation Authority in any EU member state. To enroll in the course, one must hold at least a Private Pilot License PPL(A).
Module 1: 022 Instrumentation, 040 Human Performance and Limitations, 050 Meteorology
Module 2: 010 Aviation Law, 033 Flight Planning, 050 Meteorology, 062 Radio Navigation
Module 3: 010 Aviation Law, 022 Instrumentation, 033 Flight Planning, 050 Meteorology, 090 Communication
The BIR(A) theory course is competency-based. Students can demonstrate their competencies in an entry test, and the test results determine which parts of the curriculum will be recommended for the student to study.
Graduates of the BIR(A) Theory Course will receive a certificate of successful completion of the course, with which they can apply for the theory examination for the Basic Instrument Rating BIR(A) at the Civil Aviation Authority in any EU member state. The BIR(A) Theory examination, along with BIR(A) flight training and a flight examination with a flight examiner, is a necessary requirement for obtaining the BIR(A) qualification. The validity of the certificate of successful completion of the BIR(A) Theory Course is 1 year from the date of issue. Before that, the applicant for the BIR(A) qualification should complete flight training and successfully pass the flight examination with a flight examiner.
