CB-IR(A) – Competency-Based Instrument Rating (Aeroplane)

In accordance with EASA standards: PART-FCL

Competency-Based Instrument Rating (Aircraft) – CB-IR(A) is an equivalent alternative to the Instrument Rating – IR(A). Applicants for the IR(A) qualification can utilize their previous training and experience in the CB-IR(A) course. Such previous experience can include flights with an instructor authorized for IR training or flights as a pilot-in-command under Instrument Flight Rules gained during, for example, IFR training/flights in countries outside EASA.

Requirements

Career

Instrument Rating CBIR(A) or IR(A) is an essential qualification in the training of an airline transport pilot. It allows a pilot to conduct flights in meteorological conditions where visibility is significantly reduced, requiring the use of instruments at any phase of the flight. Private pilots can also benefit from the CBIR(A)/IR(A) qualification if they wish to fly in meteorological conditions without visual reference to the ground.

The advantage of the Competency-Based Instrument Rating CBIR(A) course over the traditional Instrument Rating IR(A) course is a shorter training period and the opportunity to leverage previous training or experience in instrument flying obtained, for example, in countries outside the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Previous training experience can be credited up to a maximum of 30 hours towards the total required training time.

A comparison between CB-IR(A) and IR(A) qualifications is available in the comparative table here.

Description

Flight Training:

Total flight training hours: 40 hours

  • In the aircraft: 15 hours
  • In the FNPT II simulator: 25 hours

Theory Training:

Before starting the CBIR(A) training course, students must initiate the IR(A) or CBIR(A) Theory Course, or the ATPL(A) Theory Course if applicable. More information about the IR(A) Theory Course in our school can be found here. For those interested in working as an airline pilot, we recommend completing the required theoretical training within the Airline Transport Pilot License ATPL(A) course.

The IR(A)/CBIR(A)/ATPL(A) Theory Course must be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and it can be completed at any flight school offering this course. The candidate for the IR(A) practical exam must successfully pass the theoretical exams in IR(A), CBIR(A), or ATPL(A) conducted by the CAA in any EASA member state.

Price

The price you will have to pay to learn to fly and obtain a pilot’s license varies from person to person and depends on many factors. The price should not be the main factor in deciding where to get your pilot’s license. When it comes to flight training, cheap is rarely good.

Basic factors affecting the cost of training:

  • Your goals in aviation
  • Type of aircraft for training with regard to goals
  • How much time can I devote to training

Your goals in flying have a significant impact on how your overall flight training will be conducted. If you want to fly only recreationally, training in an aircraft with lighter avionics will be significantly cheaper than compared to a businessman or future professional pilot.

The price of pilot training for individual pilot licenses is set in connection with the number of flight hours in the curriculum, the time of ground preparations, and theoretical instruction in the classroom. Further, it is necessary to count additional expenses for landing and other airport fees and fees for exams at authorities and payments for obtaining necessary permits for training.
